Then There Was Us
A quiet, flexible visual identity designed to give documentary photography and its narratives space to lead.
The Breif
How do we create an identity that doesn't distract from the narratives and imagery of those featured, whilst still maintaining a clear visual direction and strategy for a publication devoted to the showcase of documentary photographers.
The Approach
Stripping the identity back to its essentials, the project considered how motion and the positioning of elements could establish a subtly distinctive but quiet visual identity. The aim was to create a system that maintained structure and consistency throughout the project while keeping the content clear and central. The identity drew references from the block-like nature of pixels and the rounded dots of camera focus points, creating a subtle, rather than overt, nod to photographic processes and technologies.
The Outcome
A visual identity that uses structure and form to present work with clarity. The flexible system offers both a minimal and a bolder approach, allowing the tone to shift when needed across social media, web, and print. Throughout, the identity maintains a consistent strategic approach, creating a quiet visual language that supports the work without distracting from the narratives on display.
